Advocating Solutions For DC And The Region
Our Nation’s Capital (ONC) is a public interest group whose mission and agenda is to advocate in favor of visionary solutions to the challenges facing the transportation system serving Washington, DC. ONC firmly believes that promoting local Infrastructure Banks will create greater awareness about the city's transportation needs. This in turn will lead to more funds to fix DC's multimodal network of transportation modes. And the resulting increase of intermodal connectivity, expanded transit options, repaired infrastructure, and other improvements will provide greater benefits by stimulating job creation and economic vitality.
Our Nation’s Capital is primarily focused locally in the greater Capital region of DC, Maryland & Virginia. ONC believes that unifying the three regions will help generate critical mass in favor of its mission through unprecedented regional cooperation. A strong voice among ONC’s coalition stakeholders will create momentum and lead to a groundswell of support across the metro area. Legislative solutions are attainable if the three regions work together. Common ground unites our members on many issues. Working cooperatively, we can work to enact policies that fix the region’s roads, create jobs, mitigate congestion, clean the air and water, fight sprawl through effective land use, provide affordable housing and enhance quality of life for all.
ONC’s non-partisan, innovative approaches are unique in their vision for a future DC metro region. In this livable community of the future, our quality of life continues to improve along a parallel track as our infrastructure does. Multimodalism enhances mobility and promotes cost-effective solutions that bring various governments, the private sector, labor, citizen activists and independent mobility-minded groups together to help push for and encourage enactment of a robust program that uses Infrastructure Banks, Public-Private Partnerships and regional cooperation to benefit area residents.
President Barack Obama and then-Gov. Tim Kaine (D-VA) discuss the need for Infrastructure Bank investment against the backdrop of a road project in Springfield, Virginia in 2010.
ONC's Agenda:
* Improve aging transportation infrastructure.
* Create and fill more new jobs.
* Modernize the transportation network, which will promote economic growth and attract top employers.
* Grow smartly and fight sprawl to ease congestion.
* Create more affordable housing so workers can live closer to their jobs.
* Slash emissions to improve regional air quality and curb global warming.
* Mitigate traffic congestion and cut commuting times.
* Enhance our energy security by cutting fuel wasted while idling in gridlock.
* Boost DC as a top global tourist destination.
